Doing Activities Differently: Adaptation Strategies That Protect Independence
Sometimes recovery means returning to the same activities. Sometimes it means doing them differently.
Adaptation isn’t ‘giving in’—it’s a practical way to stay engaged in life while protecting your body and energy.
Three ways to adapt any activity
Change the task: simplify steps, reduce time, break into stages
Change the environment: layout, lighting, seating, tools
Change the support: equipment, prompts, help from others
Examples you can try
Sit for tasks that usually involve standing
Use a timer to prevent overdoing it
Batch similar tasks to reduce transitions
Use checklists for multi-step activities
Use ergonomic tools to reduce strain
Adaptation + progression
You can adapt now and still build capacity over time. The goal is participation today and progress over weeks.
Next step
If you’re unsure what adaptations would help most, OT can assess your tasks and environment and recommend practical changes.
